Why Bulgaria
Bulgaria is located in South Eastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea, between Romania and Turkey. Situated on the crossroads between Europe and Asia, Bulgaria has had an amazing array of settlers from both continents throughout its long history making it an excellent place to visit with lots of attractions.
Bulgaria is renowned for its hot, dry summers and its cold damp winters which helps to ensure that the countryside is very green and lush. Additionally, being just a 3 hour flight from the UK and just a 3 hour time difference (April to September), it is a great location that you can get to relatively quickly and minimal disruption to your body clock.
The beaches (particularly around the Albena area) are clean and have been awarded a blue flag. The sea is calm and gently sloping, making it an excellent place for families.
History
In the 7th Century the first Bulgarian state emerged, formed by the Bulgars. By the 14th Century, Bulgaria became over run by the Ottoman Turks.
The Country regained its independence from the Turks on 3rd March 1878, which is a Bulgarian National Bank Holiday, called Liberation Day.
Having fought on the losing side in both world wars, Bulgaria fell under the influence of the Soviet Union and became a Peoples Republic in 1946. This communist domination was ended in 1990 when Bulgaria held it's first multiparty election since WWII, and has been steadily driving towards a political democracy and market economy ever since. With Bulgaria now a member of both the EU and NATO, it is little wonder that, over the past few years, it is fast becoming a very popular holiday destination.
